At-Risk Teenagers - A Growing and Under Served Group
PROJECT EXTREME caters to teens whose behavior is spiraling out
of control. They are part of a growing population of at-risk adolescents
who are embracing destructive, high-risk activities, therefore separating themselves from home and community.
Most communities, families, and schools are ill prepared for these problems, having had little experience with them until now. In addition, the stigma attached to these problems has resulted in communal denial and ambivalence in confronting them.
The at-risk teen problem has established itself in communities across the United States and is growing at an alarming rate. Although the problem is pervasive throughout the country, New York is considered by most educators and counselors to be the "epicenter" of this epidemic.
