In Memory of
Chani Cohen Nussbaum

Chani Cohen Nussbaum z"l, was truly an inspiration to her friends and her family from quite a young age. After experiencing several unsettling family problems during her early school years, Chani was dealt with the shock of her father's untimely death when she had just started high school. Coping with her own painful loss and trying to be supportive of her siblings during such a trying time in their young lives proved to be a huge challenge for a young girl.
Ultimately, it was decided by extended family, that Chani should move to California to live with her uncle and his family there. Though all teens experience pressures and anxieties, imagine how difficult this time proved to be for Chani, having lost a parent suddenly and then relocating far away from the only life she had ever known before.
The type of young woman which she became attests to her inner strength and resilience, despite the odds against her. After high school, having moved back to the New York area, Chani attended college and made a life for herself, all on her own, all the while never forgetting to care for her siblings, grandparents and extended family. Despite the hardships she had faced, Chani always remained upbeat, won the hearts of many friends and touched the lives of all she met.
When Chani met Guy Nussbaum and they married, she was the happiest she had ever been in her life. The birth of Judah, named for her beloved father, was the "icing on the cake." But then, tragedy struck again when she was diagnosed with cancer. Always the survivor, Chani was determined to beat the disease and go on building her new family. With Guy and Judah, she finally had a real family home and she was going to fight her best to hold on to it.
We all thought that she had beat the odds when David was born but sadly, it wasn't meant to be. Neither Chani nor Guy ever gave up fighting, right until the end. Although her loss is a tragedy- for her family and her friends; her life was a victory, a rare success story, of a teen-at-risk, who was able to overcome so many challenges through her own strength of character!
Most teens are not as strong as Chani Cohen was at a young age. Chani's teen years would have been so much easier to bear had there been a Project Extreme at the time. " Project Extreme is a one of a kind not-for-profit organization, which provides unique, innovative and individualized attention and services for teens-at-risk. Project Extreme is about new life and fresh hope for Jewish young people with significant challenges."
We have created this fund to honor Chani Cohen Nussbaum's (z"l )memory, her compassion, optimism, and inner strength. Chani Cohen Nussbaum z"l, would want every teen-at-risk to find the long-term support that Project Extreme offers young people.
